When it comes to lifestyles, my mind naturally goes to Tuscany and comparing the Italians’ lifestyle with that of the American lifestyle. Spending 6 months in Tuscany in 2012, and living among the locals, was an unforgettable experience. I must say there are so many differences, and yet so much familiarity.
For example, Sundays in Italy are for the family as stores are closed (as they once were in America). Families you will see out taking walks, riding bicycles or just sitting home watching soccer on TV. The familiar sounds of citizens rooting for their team and celebrating each win was most familiar. Not understanding the Italian language, I could not understand the words, but the cheers were certainly understood!
Also on Sunday’s I would take a bus into Florence in order to attend a English speaking church. Since the bus schedule is reduced to a minimum on Sundays, I had to wait until Sunday evening to take one home, or I had to take a different route that let me off a couple miles from my condo, and walk the rest of the way on a busy highway. My car in the states is such a nice luxury!
Being able to walk along the narrow sidewalks and take in the many centuries’ old buildings was such a beauty in itself, in Italy. However, the modernization of our newly built homes here is a wonder also!
I am sure when an Italian comes to Colorado to stay for a while, they might also see the differences, and realize (as I did there) is no place like home!
